Frequently Asked Questions about Hospice
Common questions about hospice care
Understanding what hospice care is, what it includes, and when there’s a need for it is essential for families with elderly or terminally ill loved ones. We have compiled a FAQ about hospice care to provide you with answers on some of the most common questions.
What is hospice care?
Hospice is end-of-life care that puts the focus on patient care rather than a interventional medical cure. We like to think of it as focusing on the patient and not the illness. Additionally, hospice care takes a broader approach at addressing the needs and desires of the patient and providing support for the patient's family.
What does hospice care include?
Hospice care encompasses a range of palliative services including: medical, physical, emotional and spiritual support, assistance with day-to-day activities, counselling, support, as well as bereavement services. At Texas Elite Hospice, we provide compassionate service, tailored to our patients’ complex needs so every hospice care plan we create is unique to the patient.
How do you start the process to receive hospice care?
You don't have to wait to get started. Anyone can request a hospice evaluation from Texas Elite Hospice at no charge. To be admitted into hospice a physician does have to make a determination (certification) that the patient has determined the patient has a life limiting illness with a life expectancy of 6 months or less if the disease runs its natural course.
However, its important to note that a physician can not mandate where a patient has to receive hospice care. The right to choose where a patient receives hospice care belongs solely to the patient.
Who pays for hospice care?
As a Medicare certified hospice in Houston, our services are covered by Medicare Parts A. Additionally, if you qualify, you may be eligible to have hospice paid for by Medicaid, or in some cases hospice care can be covered under some private insurance plans as well. For more specific information regarding paying for hospice care, please reach out to us by phone at (281) 689 - 5350.
Am I eligible for hospice care?
It’s a common misconception that hospice care is available to only bedridden patients struggling with terminal cancer. In reality though, hospice care is a solution for patients suffering from advanced illness where a physician has determined the patient has a life limiting illness with a life expectancy of 6 months or less if the disease runs its natural course.
